Panchakrma literally means ‘five actions’ and refers to a range of cleansing and rejuvenating techniques to flush toxins out of the body and bring balance. It can be anywhere from three days to twenty one days long. During this time one may receive many different treatments like medicated oil massage called ‘abhayanga’, shirodhara (pouring of warm oil on third eye), svedana or steam bath, basti or enema along with very light cleansing diet. All these treatments help flush the impurities, toxins or metabolic waste called ‘ama’ out of the body.
